Ayurveda is an ancient healing system based on a 5000 year old philosophy on the preservation of a health through natural treatments and source based treatment of ailments. The world’s oldest documented system of medicine uses treatments sourced from the surrounding plant life in keeping with the natural principles of Ayurveda. Ayurveda re-establishes the balance between body and soul and any course of treatment must therefore be geared to the patient’s individual needs. If one adopts a preventive approach and avoids anything that has a damaging influence on body and soul, this in turn will enable the preservation of one’s health.
What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is a treatment program for the body, mind and consciousness that cleanses and rejuvenates. It is based on Ayurvedic principles, every human being is a unique phenomenon manifested through the five basic elements of Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Combination of these elements are three doshas (tridosha): Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and their balance is unique to each individual. When this doshic balance is disturbed it creates disorder resulting in disease. There is a five fold therapy called Panchakarma to eliminate toxins & balance disturbed doshas; Vamana,Virechana,Nasya, Vasthi & Raktha Mokshna. Panchakarma is done individually for each person with their specific constitution and specific disorder in mind, thus it requires close observation and supervision. Treatment starts with pre-purification Measures of Snehan and Svedana, and then cleansing methods – Shodanas are applied.
Snehan is applying oleation to the body by oil massage or intake of oil. Oil is applied to the entire body with a particular type of massage that helps the toxins to move towards the gastrointestinal tract. Oil massage also makes the superficial and deep tissues soft and supple, thus helping to remove stress and nourish the nervous system. Snehan is given daily for three to seven days, as indicated.
Svedana is sudation or sweating and is given every day immediately following the Snehan. An herbal concoction may be added to the steam to further loosen the toxins from the individual. Svedana liquefies the toxins and increases the movement of toxins into the gastrointestinal tract.
Paschat karma is a part of Pancha karma and is known as the concluding phase or the follow-up treatments. This therapy is helpful to re-establish the digestive enzymes and replenishment of the tissues of the body that are detoxified. In Paschat Karma we suggest a diet plan to patients. Diet can vary according to diseases and other medical complexities of different patients and this procedure we call Samsarjan. The diet that our counsellors suggest is based on your doshas or diseases. This treatment process is suggested after pradhan karma where patient experiences strengthened the immune system, amplified energy level and increased longevity.
